Blog 3 Trevor and Katelyn

From the lectures and experiences we have observed so far in our travels, it is clear that there are both positive and negative viewpoints of globalization. Particularly we have observed positive viewpoint of globalization in the case of Ottakringer and Bombardier with Canadian companies. The yeast used by Ottakringer, which allows for the brewing process to produce alcohol through the consumption of sugar, is imported from Canadian suppliers. This showcases globalizations ability to allow Canadian products to be sold across nations. Additionally, during our visit to the Canadian Embassy in Vienna, another example of positive effects of globalization in the context of Canada is the success of Bombardier. Simon-Pierre explained how as the company matured, they expanded their business into the Austrian market through the purchase of a production plant. This created mutually beneficial effects as jobs were created, profits were gained, and new relationships were established.

With globalization being so prominent in the world, it is unfortunately impossible to have only positive viewpoints as there are some individuals who experience the negative impacts. For example, during our trip to the embassy Simon-Pierre informed a few students about a recent incident that occurred where a radical nationalist threw an explosive into the Canadian Embassy of Vienna. This is an example of how globalization can have negative effects as this act was likely done with a protectionist intent. There are some groups that fight against globalization through violence and can put people in serious danger because of it. Another negative viewpoint that we have heard many times, from multiple sources, is that of the wage gap. Those who are against globalization are quick to point out that the wage gap between the richest and the poorest has not closed. They explain that the rich keep getting richer and the poor have stayed relatively just as poor. Things such as outsourcing have caused individuals in countries that have low labour standards to suffer in the work environment, due to low wages and poor working conditions. Repercussions of outsourcing also extend to countries with high labour standards, as unemployment rises with the availability of cheaper labour elsewhere.

What is the most negative viewpoint of globalization that you have learned throughout our study tour so far?
