Being a Stranger in a Strange Land

We have a world view which is limited by our inability to speak anything other than English. This trip has highlighted that fact. We think, read and speak English. Many people here in Budapest speak some English, enough to complete a transaction or give directions but we are not able to understand who they are or how they feel. We can understand what they are saying but are unable to comprehend anything past the superficial.

This disconnect of languages limits our world view because we are not fully able to grasp the thoughts and beliefs of the people who do not speak English. We can be told something in English which a person has thought about in another language, but the translation leaves out the subtle nuances which gives what they said its true meaning.

In Edmonton communicating with strangers comes easy. We can go to the store and have no trouble explaining what we want to the staff. We can ask a stranger for directions and understand what they are saying. Here in Budapest we have lost our ability to have a conversation with nearly everyone outside of our group. The lack of communication skills makes it difficult to understand the social context of the situation we are in.

We have a greater appreciation for Individuals coming to Canada who do not have the ability to communicate well in English. Living in Canada without the ability to understand English would be lonely and frustrating. What are some ways we can overcome language barriers and gain a better understanding of the people around us?
